Basic Research Skills for Non-Profits
Half-Day Virtual Workshop

Non-profit and charitable organizations are called upon to justify their work regularly; whether it be to funders, to community leaders, or to clients, there is always a need to show the value of the investment in terms of impact, change, and outcomes.

This workshop will provide knowledge and basic research skills related to the various methods and means to gather, interpret and share data in non-profit environments. These methods include commonly used assessments, including Needs Assessments, SWOT/SOAR Analysis, and Market and Workforce Assessments, and will also cover the preparation of Briefing Notes that highlight issues and suggest options for change. Other topics covered will include ethics, developing research questions, weaving cultural sensitivity and safety into the research process, and ensuring that community and clients are centred and involved along the way.

Program Development 101
Full-day, In-person Training

Non-profit and charitable organizations are excellent at responding to emerging needs in real time, however this can get in the way of proactive program planning. This leads to the development of programs and services “on the fly,” which can lead to a variety of risks to the community, staff, and to the organization as a whole. This is where Program Development Skills come in – when applied systematically to programs and services, it helps to promote stability, sustainability, and success for your staff and the communities you serve.

This workshop will provide the knowledge and skills necessary to integrate a “Program Science” approach into the development and delivery of diverse, culturally responsive programs and services in your organization. You will engage in small and large group discussions, and will have the opportunity to practice concrete Program Development skills that lead to building a logic model and theory of change for a program or service you currently run.

    1. Understand “Program Science” and how it drives the program development process in  non-profit and charitable organizations.

      2. Understand the Program Development Cycle and identify where your focus program is situated.

    2. Understand the role that Logic Models and a Theory of Change play in structuring the flow of resources and communicating the impact of your work.

    3. Practice applying program development skills to a program or service that you run by using Logic Model templates that can be implemented in your organization.

    4. Identify where and how program development processes fit within the broader context of culturally diverse and responsive health, social service or educational non-profit / charitable organizations.
