MEET JARED
Having worked with local governments, Indigenous organizations, national think tanks, government funders, and even some grass-roots collectives, I’ve learned different perspectives on serving communities.
My journey as non-profit leader began in 2008 as a volunteer for a harm reduction program in downtown Winnipeg. Shortly after, I began direct service work in a small 2STLGBQ+ focused, community-based organization, which I like to call my “Non-profit Boot Camp Experience” where I did everything from making homemade pirogies for a fundraiser to managing a summer camp and multiple programs. From there, I moved on to a corporate community health centre, which marked the beginning of a progressive leadership journey where I left as the Co-Executive Director prior to my departure in 2022.
While I have been a volunteer, board member, staff member, and senior manager in local and national non-profits, it’s my experience as a client at one point in my youth that galvanizes my love for this work. Both using the services of - and working in - non-profits has taught me the value of accountability in the charitable sector and how to work with the most valuable and precious resource we have—people. I cherish this experience and bring all of it into my consulting and research work.
Today, I bring Masters and PhD level training into my practice with organizations to equip them with the data, evidence and tools they need to lead cutting edge change in our complex world. By focusing on evidence-based and theoretically drive methods and approaches, I support clients to enhance their capacity to help others. Not only am I satisfied and excited by seeing others grow, this work contributes to my own mission of challenging structures and creating systemic change for the benefit of those marginalized by complex systems.
My work serves community, and thus it is important to locate myself socially and culturally among the web of oppressions that shape our individual and collective experiences. As a white, able-bodied, queer man living with different abilities in this world, I acknowledge possessing privileged and oppressed experiences simultaneously. While my visible whiteness, maleness and other positions of power grant me a number of tangible privileges, I am humbled by the experiences of oppression and marginalization that shaped my world view. With this in mind, I remain committed to work that closes the equity gap between privileged and oppressed groups with very specific attention and intention devoted to addressing the impacts of colonization, and reckoning with my part in benefitting from and sustaining colonialism today.
I believe in and support ACTION as a means to do this work in a good way, and this includes weaving decolonizing and anti-oppressive approaches into my research and consulting practice. It also means that I lean into the discomfort of white fragility through ongoing and persistent learning, unlearning, and critical self-examination.
To quote a mentor, “The burning means it’s working,” and if I’m not feeling the heat, I am reminded to try harder.
